With Christmas looming large, a consumer safety group has warned parents against buying a range of popular toys for fear that their children could be seriously injured or even killed by them.
The annual list, released by the World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.) is based on a review of the most recent childhood injury and fatality statistics.
Parents will be alarmed to see mass-produced toys like fidget spinners, dolls and even Wonder Woman’s plastic sword on the list.
‘Behind the statistics, are real children that have been injured or tragically lost their life,’ W.A.T.C.H. president Joan Siff said during this morning’s news conference.
The conference was held on behalf of Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Massachussets as a way to further demonstrate the hazardous selected toys.
The gadgets were deemed ‘inconsistent’ with ‘inadequate warnings, cautions and age recommendations,’ according to an NBC report.
Their top ten most hazardous toys for 2017 are:
Pull Along Pony
The Pull Along Pony has a 19-inch cord that raises concerns of strangulation in children of all ages
Jetts Heel Wheels
Heel Wheels are strapped to kids’ shoes as roller skates but pose a burn risk because they include ‘real sparking action’
Slackers Slackline Classic Series Kit
WATCH says Slackline can lead to severe injury and death, as the toy is meant to be hung between two trees
Wonder Woman Battle-Action Sword
The Wonder Woman sword could potentially cause blunt-force and bodily injuries
Hallmark ‘Itty Bittys’ Baby Stacking Toy
Itty Bittys Baby Stacking Toy includes small and larger rings that pose a risk of strangulation and suffocation
Hand Fidgetz Spinners
WATCH says fidget spinners contain small parts that can be a choking hazard to children
The Oval Xylophone poses a risk for children as it includes a wooden stick may cause bodily injury
Nerf Zombie Strike Deadbolt Crossbow
‘Zombie Strike’ crossbow raises the risk of eye and face injuries with its pressurized pull back lever
Spider-Man Spider-Drone Official Movie Edition
The Spider-Man drone includes multiple rotating blades that can lead to eye and other bodily injuries
Brianna Babydoll made this year’s list for a potential choking hazard as it includes small accessories
‘The numbers don’t tell the full picture. Recalls are only a band-aid. Dangerous toys shouldn’t reach the hands of consumers in the first place,’ Siff said in the statement.
Listed toys emphasized include fidget spinners, which were recalled earlier this year as the item includes mini parts deemed a potential choking hazard.
‘We don’t need a testing lab to know that’s a strangulation and entanglement hazard,’ Siff added.
The Pull Along Pony, which has a 19-inch cord attached, raises concerns of strangulation among children of all ages.
The Wonder Woman Battle-Action Sword and Spider-Man drone may lead to severe bodily injuries.
‘W.A.T.C.H. says there have been at least 15 toy recalls since last December,’ according to NBC.
The safety group has released the annual list of hazardous toys for more than four decades.
