Barack Obama being seen in a 1998 photograph showing him as a young man and member of the Black Panther Party is a fake photograph. There is no truth to a photo shared on social media allegedly showing the former President of the United States of being a Black Panther member.
Rather, images were altered to suggest that Obama was an active Black Panther. In this case, the below image is just another doctored image claiming that Obama was a Black Panther.
However, there is no truth to the above image, according to Snopes. Rather, the above image has been doctored from another actual photograph. The above photo was manipulated from an existing one, which was subsequently circulated via e-mail and web sites prone to spreading misinformation.
Snopes noted that on July 23, 2014, Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children shared the altered image and then deleted it, but it remained visible in the above-linked reverse image search result.
Below is the original, unaltered photograph, first published to the web no later than Dec. 27, 2009, showing two individuals in front of various symbols of the New Black Panther Party, which is a militant group with little to do with the original Black Panthers.

However, it has been unclear where the unaltered photograph was originally posted, as versions of it posted online were invariably found on several sites that used it as a general illustration of content relating to the Black Panthers rather than discussion of a specific event.
A visible date stamp appeared to suggest the original photograph was taken in 1998.
At its inception on Oct. 15, 1966, the Black Panther Party’s core practice was its armed citizens’ patrols to monitor the behavior of officers of the Oakland Police Department and challenge police brutality in Oakland, California. In 1969, community social programs became a core activity of party members.
The Black Panther Party instituted a variety of community social programs, most extensively the Free Breakfast for Children Programs, and community health clinics to address issues like food injustice. The party enrolled the largest number of members and made the greatest impact in the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Philadelphia.
