The ultimate pair of crossover episodes is coming to Shondaland. ABC’s hit series “Scandal” and “How To Get Away with Murder,” lead by Kerry Washington and Viola Davis, respectively, will join forces this season, the network confirmed on Wednesday after months of rumors.
The leading ladies of each series teased the crossover episodes on social media on Wednesday. “Hey Ms @violadavis ❤️ check it out,” Washington, who plays the powerful Olivia Pope on “Scandal,” wrote on Instagram. “This spot look familiar?! Where are you?” In the photo, Washington can be seen sitting on a bench in the courthouse hallway where many tense confrontations have gone down throughout the four seasons of “How To Get Away with Murder.”
Meanwhile, Davis, who plays the fierce Annalisa Keating on “How To Get Away with Murder,” replied by sharing a photo from the “Scandal” set. “Hey @KerryWashington, guess where I am?!” Davis is sitting on a desk from the White House drama, which is currently in its seventh and final season.
In an interview with Deadline, “How To Get Away with Murder” creator Peter Nowalk revealed that Davis and Washington will share the screen in each crossover episode. “If I were a viewer, the thing I would want to see is Kerry and Viola in a scene together, that was really the reason to do it,” he said. “To have storyline together and really shed light on both of their characters in a new way. That, of course, means that Annalise is in Olivia’s world during the Scandal episode, so she’ll be meeting the Scandal characters, and Olivia is in the Murderworld, and she’ll be meeting some of the Murder characters. You’ll see that crossover.”
The “Scandal” episode, written by Raamla Mohamed and directed by series regular Tony Goldwyn, will air before the Zetna Fuentes-directed “How To Get Away with Murder” episode, according to Deadline. Rhimes shared a photo of part of the script to her social media on Wednesday, which previews the moment when Davis and Washington’s characters meet face-to-face for the first time.
A date for the crossover episodes has not yet been announced.
Shondaland’s TGIT lineup, which includes “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away with Murder,” is set to return Jan. 18 on ABC.
