It’s only Tuesday and Utah Senator Orrin Hatch is already having quite a rough week. The U.S. senator was captured on video taking off a pair of glasses that he wasn’t actually wearing—and now the amusing and somewhat relatable moment is going viral.
In the short clip, captured by The Wrap’s Jon Levine, Hatch can be seen removing the “invisible glasses” from his face. “WATCH: Sen. Orrin Hatch removes a pair of glasses he’s not wearing,” Levine captioned the three-second video, which has been viewed more than 2 million times.

The viral moment did not go unnoticed by Hatch’s office, which cheekily responded to the video with a joke of their own. “Oh you mean his invisible glasses from Warby Parker? They’re new, you’ve probably never heard of them,” one of Hatch’s staff members tweeted, along with a photo of the supposed “invisible” spectacles. CNN reports that the moment took place during a “contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. The senator, totally unfazed, blew by it and began his questioning on worker visas.”
According to Hatch’s communications director Matt Whitlock, via The Hill, “The Senator wears reading glasses and normally reads over his notes one last time before questioning witnesses in a hearing. That morning, however, he “forgot them at home” and instinctively reached for them before he started speaking. Earlier this month, the senator announced his plan to retire later this year.

Twitter users, especially glasses wearers, found the “invisible glasses” moment all too relatable. “As someone who has done this myself, I’m gonna say he got partway through, realized, and then just committed to the gesture,” one user tweeted. “He forgot he wasn’t wearing glasses, but he followed through on the pantomime, which I respect,” another added.
The viral clip sparked many other jokes. See how social media reacted to the video below:
