NFL Announcing That the National Anthem Will Not Be Televised Before the Super Bowl Is False

Did the NFL announce that the national anthem will not be televised before the Super Bowl due to player protests? No. P!nk will be singing the national anthem before Super Bowl LII and, according to an NFL press release, her performance “will be televised live.”

According to Snopes, the fake claim originated in a Facebook status posted last week. It reads, “Boycott! Eagles v. Patriots Superbowl Will Not Televise Singing Of Star Spangled Banner!!!” The status, which has been shared more than 25,000 times, garnered strong reactions from people—ranging from sharing support of the “boycott” to saying they wouldn’t be watching the game anyway. The claim about the national anthem not being aired, however, is completely false.

Earlier this month, the NFL confirmed that P!nk’s national anthem performance would be “televised live” on NBC prior to the Super Bowl. Additionally, Fred Gaudelli, NBC Sports executive producer, said the network will not only broadcast the national anthem, but will also show NFL players who choose to protest during the song. “When you are covering a live event, you are covering what’s happening,” he said during the winter 2018 Television Critics Association press tour. “If there are players who choose to kneel, they will be shown live.”

Many people claimed that they would boycott the Super Bowl over potential player protests being shown, however, any boycotts related to the national anthem are not based on factual information. The network confirmed that the singing of the national anthem will be televised live and possible protests will be covered before the game. Super Bowl LII begins Sunday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. on NBC.

I love the super bowl, not sure how to handle this. Maybe we could BOYCOTT ALL THE COMMERCIALS and let the NFL and the advertisers know… Money rules this league and the league needs advertisers.
