Walt Disney Co. building a massive $6.5 billion resort in Toronto Islands is a hoax. There is no truth to a report that Disney announced it would now be building a future location in the Toronto Islands, which are a chain of small islands in Lake Ontario, south of mainland Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Where did this hoax originate? DailyHive.com published the hoax on April 1, 2018, reporting that Disney would be opening a multi-billion dollar resort in the Toronto Islands. You can read it below.
The $6.5-billion attraction, known as “Toronto Disney Resort,” centres on the construction of Canada’s very own Disneyland theme park – Toronto Disneyland – on the site of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
Other public spaces on the islands beyond the airport site will be maintained as accessible park space and improved through a new parks lands management partnership with Disney.
There will also be hotels on the island, next to Disneyland, and improved transportation links between the island and downtown.
“Here in Toronto at this spectacular location, we are dreaming of something truly magical that not only showcases the best of Disney’s storytelling but also creates a one-of-a-kind destination that will delight and entertain people for generations to come,” said Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Corporation.
However, there is no truth to the above story. What is the problem with the story to make it false? For one thing, there is no official press release by Disney. Additionally, there is no legitimate news coverage of such an announcement happening with Disney moving in to Toronto.
Rather, the above hoax is labeled at the bottom as an April Fool’s Day prank. A “Toronto Disneyland” link at the bottom also takes readers not to a site featuring the new “Happiest Place on Earth” location, but to the PortsToronto web site. Nonetheless, some confused the hoax as real news.
Here are some examples of people sharing the hoax on social media.
