Reports that Amazon is launching a new In-Bed Delivery service, allowing couriers to deliver packages to customers while they sleep, are false. Rumors the tech giant will begin making deliveries directly to people’s bedrooms stemmed from a satire website.
The fake claim originated on The Babylon Bee, which describes itself as a “Christian news satire” website. The article claimed that Amazon had introduced In-Bed Delivery, a service that 20 million customers had already used when placing their orders. It purported:
Touting it as their latest attempt to offer customers the ultimate in convenience and customer service, Amazon announced Wednesday that they will now deliver packages directly to your bedroom in the middle of the night while you sleep.
“In-Bed Delivery is a really wonderful new service,” an Amazon press release stated. “We will gain access to your home through the front door, quietly creep through the house with your packages, ever-so-gently open your bedroom door to enter your most intimate room, and set the merchandise near your bed while you blissfully sleep, careful not to wake you or your significant other.”
The report is, of course, completely satirical. Amazon did not launch an In-Bed Delivery service and the company is not creepily delivering packages to people’s bedrooms while they sleep. The Babylon Bee clearly states in their disclaimer that they publish parodies and satire stories: “The Babylon Bee is Your Trusted Source For Christian News Satire.”
Last year, Amazon introduced an in-home delivery service that allows couriers to unlock a customer’s front door using Amazon Key and drop off a package directly inside a home. Many people were skeptical of the concept, while others called it “scary.” They have since launched a new in-car delivery service. The In-Bed Delivery service, however, is nothing more than a hoax.
