A Saudi Arabian man having his hand cut off for masturbating during Ramadan at prayer time in a large mosque is fake news. There is no truth to a report that a Muslim man in Saudi Arabia received a harsh punishment for pleasuring himself during the month of fasting observed by Muslims. If the story sounds wild and crazy that is because it is just that as it is false.

Where did this fake news originate? World News Daily Report published the fake news article on May 23, 2018, reporting that a Muslim man was punished by having his hand cut off because he was found to be masturbating during Ramadan. You can read the fake news article below.

Al Bahah | A Saudi Arabian man has been amputated of his left hand because of his obsessive habit of masturbating during the sacred religious period of Ramadan.

The man caused a commotion last week as he exhibited his genitals while masturbating during prayer time in a large mosque of the Al Bahah area, creating a wave of panic amongst fellow worshippers who exited the mosque in great numbers reports the Riyad Herald.

The man’s family that claims that he is sick and possessed by an evil jinn (spirit) also said he had no control over his left hand and masturbated often, even while reading the Quran, during prayer time and at the mosque.

“I can’t bring my son anywhere, he always masturbates everywhere we go. It is like his hand is possessed by some evil jinn,” said his mother in court.

However, there is no truth to the above story. What is the problem with this story to make it false? For one thing, there is no “Riyad Herald” newspaper. The closet media outlet to that name is Riyad Mansour. Additionally, the photograph used in the fake news can originally be found here. The man is actually Ayanle Hassan Ali who is accused of attacking soldiers at a military recruitment center in 2016.

Ali has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, all “at the direction of or in association with a terrorist group.”

Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. During Ramadan, Muslims will not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset and thy are also supposed to avoid impure thoughts and bad behavior. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends and then celebrate together with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, which is one of Islam’s major holidays.
