CBS picking up “Roseanne” after the show’s cancellation by ABC after Roseanne Barr’s racist comments is satirical news. There is truth ABC pulled the plug on the Roseanne revival after Roseanne Barr described former President Barack Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as the child of the “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes.” However, there is no truth that CBS picked up “Roseanne.”
Where did this satirical news originate? Daily World Update published the satirical news article on May 30, 2018, reporting that despite Barr’s controversial comments causing her show to be cancelled by ABC, “Roseanne” would be saved by CBS. You can read the satirical news article below.
Roseanne is finding out that her show isn’t as dead as everyone assumed. Yesterday, after ABC canceled her, Roseanne had a roller-coaster ride of a day with offers from Netflix, NBC and Fox. She accepted all three, only to have them yanked away later.
The latest is CBS. Programming Director Art Tubolls says they’d love to put Roseanne right next to The Big Bang Theory, playing on the crossover actors and actresses who have played roles on both shows.
It remains to be seen if CBS will still be offering anything by day’s end. Netflix opted out after a phone call from Obama and NBC dropped out without citing a reason. Fox was in the game for a few hours but this morning brought the news that they, too, would decline.
However, there is no truth to the above story’s claim that “Roseanne” had been saved by CBS. For one thing, CBS Programming Director is not “Art Tubolls” but rather Kelly Kahl is President of CBS Entertainment.
ABC cancelled the revival for another season as ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.” Dungey was appointed to her current role in February 2016, becoming the first black entertainment president of a major broadcast television network.
Barr attacked Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama, in a since-deleted tweet in which she said “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Barr subsequently apologized: “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me — my joke was in bad taste.”
There is no announcement by CBS about any pickup of “Roseanne” as of this writing. Of course, that does not mean CBS might not pick it up at some point but as of this writing there has been no indication that the streaming service has done so. Nonetheless, there were some people fooled by the satirical news. Here are some reactions to the satirical news on the site’s Facebook page.
Finally, and most importantly, Daily World Update carries the following disclaimer:
The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
Currently, EW reported that there is a possibility that ABC would move forward with a series starring some of the characters from “Roseanne.” The problem with that is “Roseanne” was created by Barr. If the sitcom were to continue without the matriarch, the actress would still benefit financially.
