Dancing with the Stars: Social Media Reacts to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Lindsay Arnold’s Elimination

ABC

The couple to go home as part of week two’s double elimination during “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and partner Lindsay Arnold. Arike Ogunbowale and Gleb Savchenko were also eliminated. Chris Mazdzer and Witney Carson were in jeopardy.

Tonight, the couple danced a unique salsa to “La Malanga” and scored a 26 out of 40. Bruno Tonioli called the dance clever, while Carrie Ann Inaba said it was a very nice tribute to Abdul-Jabbar’s father. They also danced a jive/swing combination for the Team Dance round, earning another 33 points. During last week’s premiere, Abdul-Jabbar and Arnold danced a sparkly cha cha to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” and scored a 17 out of 30. Ultimately, the NBA legend’s lovable personality was not enough to save him from elimination.

Arnold was the season 25 Mirrorball champion, winning the trophy with partner Jordan Fisher. Her previous partners have included boxer Victor Ortiz, former NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr. and retired MLB player David Ross.

Abdul-Jabbar is an NBA legend. According to ABC, he “is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a six-time NBA champion and the league’s only 6x MVP. He is one of a handful of influential and respected black men in America who has a national platform as a regular contributing columnist for newspapers and magazines around the world, such as The Guardian and The Hollywood Reporter, where he shares his thoughts on some of the most socially relevant and politically controversial topics facing our nation today. After 50 years as an athlete and activist, he offers his perspectives as a nationally recognized speaker who regularly appears on the lecture circuit.”

“Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” is hosted by Tom Bergeron and sports broadcaster Erin Andrews. The judging panel is composed of ballroom experts Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Their scores, along with America’s votes, determine who gets to stay and who is sent home as couples vie for the coveted Mirrorball trophy during the special, four-week season.

The remaining athletes include Olympic figure skaters Adam Rippon and Mirai Nagasu, luger Chris Mazdzer, softball pitcher Jennie Finch, NFL star Josh Norman and former figure skater Tonya Harding.

The all-athlete edition of “Dancing with the Stars” airs every Monday night at 8 p.m. on ABC.
