Reports that a man was arrested for using his lottery winnings to dump $200,000 worth of manure on his ex-boss’s lawn are false. The weird rumor about a vengeful former employee stemmed from a notorious purveyor of fake news and satire.
The fake claim originated on World News Daily Report, a website known for publishing fake news and outlandish satire. The article claimed that a 54-year old man from Illinois had used his lottery winnings to purchase more than $200,000 worth of manure, which was then dumped on the lawn of his ex-employer. It purported:
A man from Illinois was arrested for getting $224,000 worth of manure dumped on his former employer’s property, only two weeks after he won $125 million at the lottery and quit his job.
54-year old Brian Morris, from the small town of Clarendon Hills in Dupage County, bought over 20,000 tons of manure and asked for it to be dumped on his former boss’ property, pretending it was his residence.
Dozens of trucks filled with manure showed up in front of the house around 6:00 this morning and began dumping their smelly cargo over the property’s lawn.
The report, however, is entirely fabricated. The outlandish claims are not real and, as Snopes reports, the mugshot used in the article actually shows a man who was charged in 2014 with a DUI—not a manure-dumping prank.
