Young Adam is an unsettling story about Joe, a detached young drifter who works on a barge belonging to an older man, Les, and his younger wife Ella. It positively drowns us in a word of alxander absurdity and meaninglessness.
He was no model citizen; he abandoned his children because they interfered with his writing and later put his wife on the street to support his drug habit. As the story opens, he finds the corpse of a young woman drifting downstream. That said, it’s absorbing and short and gives a good idea of a certain type of working class, Scottish life in the middle of the last century. It has just taken people a long time to realise it. There are elements in the book that would have been shocking at the time it was written, but these moments, which include murder, or graphic descriptions of sex are more accepted now.
