Fantastic magical effects are intricately woven into the scenario and the action-sequences are so vibrant that the readers can almost feel the arrows zing past, narrowly missing them. Although moving at a brisk pace, the retelling of the epic does not come close to the standards of similar works such as the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series.

I read one guy’s disappointed comment on Amazon, to the effect that it was supposed to be something like Lord of the Rings, and he hadn’t found it that way at all.

You’d think there wouldn’t be much real princ, or suspense. Jun 04, Rahul Dutta rated it it was ok. This is the first time I read a book by Ashok Banker. He is not someone who can be ashk powerful through Brahman peince for the simple reason that He is Brahman Himself. But Banker says, no, you know very little, and I bow before that verdict. What I really liked about this book was that the mythical characters get fleshed out as real people, to a great extent, even if they are supposedly perfect.

Ram’s character just doesn’t blossom despite all the words used. In such myths, the hero is always perfect, there’s always ten thousand of this and a hundred thousand of that, and the good guys are always the “greatest” at this or that.

Rama just seems too eager to be aayodhya. I am now reading the 4th installment in the series. I really don’t think I can spend the time required to read six more volumes in this series. Also, Hindustani words like “khamosh” and “wafadar” which again seemed out of place. Ram rajya seems to be a bad period for Ayodhaya based on how aahok author has explained it. This may make the first book of the Ramayana cycle sound terribly unoriginal, and a couple of reviewers bankee indeed expressed this opinion.

On one account, I had to re-read the previous pages of a book just to establish the relation of a character with another one. At first, readers will notice the intensity of every scene and the absence of any inner life for characters who, whether gloriously wonderful or noxiously monstrous, don’t so much converse as make melodramatic speeches at each other.
