While a group of explorers scouts out the ruins, the Condor is found three hundred kilometers away roughly miles away. Especially when you’re heading toward an apparently lifeless planet on which another ship has already disappeared? Rather, it’s an exploration of a planet where organic life has been replaced at least on land by a form of robotic, inorganic life. There are various arguments among the crew, particularly the captain and the first navigator, Rohan, who is the main character in the story, about how to confront this implacable alien swarm intelligence, one that hardly seems stanislaaw of the pitiful human presence llem the planet.
I found myself wondering of any of the creative team on the recent film Big Hero 6 had read this novel, as the “microbots” in the movie act very similarly to those in the book; albeit the Regis III version being autonomous.

In the face of defeat and imminent withdrawal of the InvincibleRohan, the spaceship’s first navigator, undertakes a trip into the “enemy area” in search of four crew members who went missing in action — an attempt which he and the Invincible’ s commander see as certainly futile, but necessary for moral reasons. Highly recommended to fans of any sort of science-fiction.

The “inhabitants” of the planet are so alien that they aren’t even “alive” by the standards of man, and the most invinciboe parts of the novel are the attempts to study and understand them.

The question of inexplicable, the bizarre, the problem that lies just beyond analytical reach are woven into a science-fiction plot that sustains excitement to the last.
For Lem, the problem is never the horror of unfamiliar alien intelligence; it’s that the encounter reveals to us how little we mean by the word “intelligence. Two of my favourite quotes: Man — he saw in a flash of insight — had not yet reached the true pinnacle; he had not yet appropriated that galactocentric idea, praised since antiquity, whose real meaning could not consist in searching only for similar beings and learning to understand them, but rather in refraining from interfering with alien, non-human affairs.
He was a pioneer when he wrote about encountering a sentient ocean in Solaris inand an artificial machine-based micro-bot swarm intelligence in The Invincible inalmost a half century ago.
A few reviewers complained about the apparent absence of women in the story. With this book Lem is at his best.

They then discover The Condor, still intact and largely undamaged, hundreds of kilometers from the city. The starship Condor never returned after landing on Regis III, so its sister ship Invincible is dispatched on a rescue mission. Then they have their first encounter invicnible an ominous and metallic cloud that emits a strong electromagnetic field and interferes with their communications.
Invincible’ s crew mounts an escalating series of attacks invincjble the perceived enemy, but eventually recognizes the futility of their efforts in the most direct sense of the word. Invincible, and crew, are there to investigate the loss of sister ship, Condor.
