And once again, Winchester let me down. The actual meat of the book is lean and spread out thin, which makes it quite easy to put the book as Informative book on an interesting subject, but way too padded with tangential subjects, like spice trade, Dutch colonialism, tectonic plate science history, Islamic siimon in Indonesia, etc.

With that said, my three star rating reflects some of my ‘cons’ with this book.

Entertaining, interesting and tedious sometimes all at onceWinchester’s take on the eruption of Krakatoa and its after effects is a smorgasbord of general geological history, historical re-enactment of the eruption and the end of Dutch colonialism in what is now known as Indonesia. As someone who does not prefer to read nonfiction books, I personally felt that Krakatoa was an enjoyable read for the three-hundred some pages that it consisted.

Winchester’s biases are on full display, here, too, and they are troubling. Showing of reviews.
